The German coach will miss the Champions League Group A opener so Zsolt Low and Anthony Barry will take charge of the team in his absence

Bayern Munich kick off their Champions League group stage campaign against Manchester United on Wednesday.

It is one of the great fixtures in the competition's history. In the final in 1999, United came from behind to snatch victory over Bayern with two goals in three minutes in added time. There was also the enthralling quarter-final tie in 2010, when Bayern came from behind in each leg to eventually progress at the Red Devils' expense.

Bayern are second in the Bundesliga and are unbeaten in their opening four matches, meaning they go into the match in far better shape than Erik ten Hag's side, who are 13th in the Premier League after losing three of their opening five matches. United also have a long list of injuries and will be without Aaron Wan-Bissaka as well as Raphael Varane and Mason Mount in addition to missing Antony and Jadon Sancho.

However, Bayern will be without manager Thomas Tuchel for Wednesday's game at the Allianz Arena.

Tuchel is suspended from Bayern's first game of the 2023-24 Champions League campaign against Manchester United as a punishment for getting sent off in his side's last match in the competition against Manchester City, back in April.

What did Thomas Tuchel do to be suspended?
The Bayern boss was sent off during the quarter-final second leg against City at the Allianz Arena for his angrily reacting to a decision by referee Clement Turpin. Tuchel was furious when City defender Aymeric Laporte was not booked for a foul on Kingsley Coman.
Tuchel had to be held back by one of his assistants as he vented his fury at Turpin and the fourth official and he was eventually sent from the touchline to the stands.
After the game, Tuchel blasted: "Two things weren't at the level today: the pitch and the referee. I would give him a six (worst possible rating), from his first to his last decision, I didn't even see the foul in the penalty he gave us."

Who will manage Bayern Munich vs Manchester United?
While Tuchel is banned from the dugout, his assistant coaches Anthony Barry and Zsolt Low will direct the team from the sidelines.
Barry, from Liverpool is a former Wigan Athletic player who met Tuchel while working for him at Chelsea.
A specialist in coaching teams at set-pieces, Barry left Chelsea when Tuchel was sacked in September 2022 and moved with him to Bayern last April. He has also worked as an assistant coach for Ireland, Belgium, Portugal and Wigan.
Zsolt, from Hungary, began working with Tuchel at PSG in 2018 and followed him to Chelsea and later to Bayern.

Yes. Tuchel will only be serving a one-game ban so he will be back in the dugout for Bayern's second Champions League game at Copenhagen on October 3.
