Why Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney may need to part with Phil Parkinson as Wrexham continue push towards Premier League

Hollywood co-owners in North Wales worked hard to acquire the services of Parkinson back in the summer of 2021 – given his track record of securing promotions in the Football League. He returned the Red Dragons to the EFL in record-breaking style at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

Wrexham are now riding high in the League Two table, with a top-three finish on the cards, and those calling the shots have never shied away from the fact that they want to ride a wave of ambition and emotion all the way to the Premier League Promised Land.

Parkinson may not get the chance to complete that journey, with Football League veteran Sam Parkin – who spent plenty of time in the lower leagues during his playing days – telling the What the EFL! podcast: “I’m not for one minute suggesting that they get rid of Phil Parkinson now. But there will come a time won’t there, and whether that is when they make it to the Championship. I think he seems like a really good guy; I’ve got numerous friends who have played with him and played for him and he was absolutely the right appointment for these few seasons, as they tried to rise out of the National League and get into League One and beyond. But there will come a time when they try to play a bit more football, I’m sure. That will be the natural progression, so yeah, the squad will need to be improved, a younger average age and we may see that slight adaptation next season.”

Parkinson has taken in 162 games in charge of Wrexham, winning 100 of those, and boasts the full support of many at SToK Racecourse despite the odd question being asked of his playing style. The Red Dragons, who sit second in League Two as things stand, have three games left to take in this season.
