'What a fight' - Leah Williamson issues rallying cry to Lionesses squad seeing heroic Nations League display against Scotland go unrewarded

On a breathless night in Glasgow, the Lionesses for one cruel moment thought they had done enough to overhaul the Netherlands with a thumping 6-0 win over Scotland. But huddled together on the Hampden Park turf, the squad were stunned by the news of a 95-minute goal that clinched a group win for the Netherlands and denied Great Britain a place at next summer's Paris Olympics.

It was a rare painful night for the Lionesses under Sarina Wiegman, and their injured captain, Williamson, was quick to send a message of support.

"What a fight my girls, what a fight," Williamson posted to Instagram alongside a heartbreak emoji.

Another injured Lioness, Millie Bright, echoed the sentiment posting: "Proud, gave it everything."

The Nations League failure comes as a rare lowlight for England since the arrival of Wiegman. Coupled as it was with Team GB's Olympic qualification it sets up a curious year for the Lionesses with no competitive international football on the horizon until the beginning of Euro 2025 qualifying, and a rare summer off for players who would have made up the core of Wiegman's Olympic squad.

The England skipper continues to recover from the ACL injury which cost her a spot at this summer's World Cup. The Arsenal star shared a recent update about her progress as she looks to get back on the field in the New Year.
