With less than a year to go before the 2026 World Cup, Alejandro Zendejas is once again back in the mix for the U.S. men’s national team. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino opened the door for his return, describing the Club América midfielder as “an interesting player” and emphasizing that “everyone has the chance” to be part of the squad.
Born in El Paso, Texas but developed in Mexico, Zendejas has been a steady presence for América in recent seasons. His time with the USMNT, however, has been inconsistent - he was not part of the Nations League or Gold Cup rosters. His inclusion in the September camp marks a promising return.
Ahead of Saturday's friendly against South Korea, Pochettino explained that past omissions weren’t about quality, but circumstance.
"Many times it doesn’t depend on the players - it depends on our choices and how we want to structure the team for balance," he said. "For different reasons, the Club World Cup didn’t happen, but we thought América might qualify and that could have limited his availability [for the Gold Cup].”
