USMNT's Johnny Cardoso gets first start of season in Real Betis' Europa Conference League win over Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih

U.S international Johnny Cardoso started and played 64 minutes in Real Betis' 2-0 win over Ukrainian side Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih in the first leg of their Europa Conference League playoff clash. Ezequiel Avila and Rodri scored Betis' two goals, which will give them a advantage heading back home to Spain for the second leg.

Cardoso played into the second half, completing 85 percent of his passes, before being taken off in favor of Marc Roca. The U.S. men's national team midfielder made his first start of the season, having come off the bench in Betis' 1-1 draw with Girona to start the season.

The American burst onto the scene last season after joining Betis in January, instantly establishing himself as a legitimate presence in La Liga. He was linked to Barcelona earlier this year, but has ultimately remained with Betis for a first full season in Spain.

Cardoso will be looking to prove himself as he eyes a more consistent USMNT place, having remained a backup throughout this summer's Copa America. He appeared twice in the tournament, coming off the bench against both Bolivia and Panama, while also featuring in both of the USMNT's pre-tournament friendlies against Colombia and Brazil.

Cardoso made 19 total appearances for Betis last season, scoring a fantastic finish against Atletico Madrid for his first, and so far only, La Liga goal.

The American will look to maintain his place in the starting XI heading into the weekend when Real Betis face Alaves in their second La Liga match. The midfielder will be eager to impress reported incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino, who could be in place in time for September friendlies against Canada and New Zealand.
