The Dream Team Episode Four – The Right-backs

Over the coming months, Goal and Absa, the Official African Banking Partner of the Premier League, will be selecting The Dream Team—our greatest XI picked from African players who featured in the top-flight.
The criteria is very simple; we’ll be selecting players for each position in our team weekly, with players eligible only if they played during the Premier League era and they represented an African national team.

Edouard Mendy, Lucas Radebe, Kolo Toure and Celestine Babayaro have already taken their places in the Dream Team defence, but who will join them at right-back?

The Dream Team

Egypt duo Ahmed Fathy and Ahmed Elmohamady have just fallen short of making our four-man shortlist, as has former Arsenal right-back Emmanuel Eboue.
For all of his achievements with Ghana—notably at the 2010 World Cup—John Paintsil didn’t do enough to make the cut either, despite his performances with Fulham and West Ham United.

Who missed out?

Geremi arrived in England with some immense pedigree, having won two Champions Leagues with Real Madrid as well as a pair of back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations titles with Cameroon.
He was a fine squad player at Chelsea, admired for his versatility, his technical ability and his work rate, while he also struck a mean set piece.

The Central African was a league winner with the Blues, and also represented Middlesbrough and Newcastle United.

Surely the most outstanding African right-back of the Premier League era—perhaps one of the finest right-backs of any nationality—Lauren was a member of Arsenal’s iconic Invincibles side.
While he was a more forgotten member of that side, he was a key figure in a legendary defence, and got his hand on the Premier League title during his time in North London.

Even more remarkably, Lauren wasn’t even a right-back when he arrived in England, although Arsene Wenger clearly saw immense potential in the former winger.

Like one of our left-back contenders—Taye Taiwo—Aurier’s best years were spent in France, with the right-back sometimes struggling to hit his best form in the Premier League.
While he remains a lethal weapon going forward for Tottenham Hotspur, with his powerful running and superb delivery, there have also been the crucial lapses, the rash tackles, and disciplinary issues.

Perhaps the outstanding African right-back of his generation---and a former African champion—but the Premier League perhaps hasn’t seen Aurier at his best consistently enough.

Moses makes this shortlist on account of his time at Chelsea under Antonio Conte, when he was converted into a right wing-back role by the Italian coach.
It was a transition that helped the Nigerian turn his Blues career around, as previously, he’d long struggled to make an impact as a winger.

The wideman excelled in the 2016-17 season—winning the Premier League title as a starter despite being played in an unfamiliar role—and would later win the FA Cup with Chelsea.

Unfortunately, he moved out of favour under Maurizio Sarri, meaning his peak years in a defensive role were limited.
