The Dream Team: Episode Eight – The strikers

Goal and Absa, the Official African Banking Partner of the Premier League, are selecting The Dream Team—our greatest XI picked from African players who featured in the top flight.
The criteria is simple; we are&nbsp;selecting players for each position in our team weekly, with players eligible only if they played during the Premier League era and they represented an African national team.

Edouard Mendy, Lucas Radebe, Kolo Toure, Celestine Babayaro and Lauren have already taken their places in the Dream Team defence, with Yaya Toure, Jay-Jay Okocha, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah picked in the midfield.

Today, it's time for the strikers...

The Dream Team

So many of Africa’s greatest ever strikers have featured in the Premier League, although of course, not all of them can make our shortlist.
Samuel Eto’o and George Weah may be the continent’s finest frontmen of all time, but they didn’t achieve enough in the Prem to make the cut.

It’s a similar story for Asamoah Gyan, while for all his goals, Yakubu doesn’t have the silverware or the status of our four-man shortlist.

Who missed out?

Kanu is an undisputed legend of both African football and the Premier League, having achieved great things with Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion, Portsmouth and the Nigeria national side.
The striker was an Invincible with the Gunners, having earlier won over hearts and minds of supporters with a sensational performance to defeat Chelsea in 1999.

With the Baggies, he was part of the side that pulled off the ‘Great Escape’, surviving relegation despite having been bottom of the league at Christmas, while he was an FA Cup winner with Portsmouth.

It was the final great act of a magnificent career.

Nwankwo Kanu

There was no doubt that Adebayor was a divisive figure, but when on form and in the mood, he was deadly in front of goal.
The Togo frontman fell just short of a century of PL strikes during stints with Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, but 97 goals is still a fine haul.

He became Africa’s most expensive player when he swapped the Gunners for the Etihad Stadium.

Emmanuel Adebayor

With 62 percent of the social vote, it’s clear the fans are behind Drogba as he looks to make the maiden Dream Team.
He registered 104 Prem goals during his time with Chelsea, and no African had bettered his best single-season tally of 29 before Mohamed Salah during his first season at Liverpool.

The Ivorian great enjoyed two prolific spells at Stamford Bridge, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup and the League Cup with the West London heavyweights.

His finest achievement, of course, was the Champions League success in 2012.

Didier Drogba

A consistent goal threat at Arsenal, even if he’s joined the club at a time when they’re not truly competing for the big prizes, no one can deny Aubameyang’s effectiveness in front of goal.
In Germany, he was the Bundesliga’s top scorer after knocking Robert Lewandowski off his perch, and translated his scoring form to the Premier League seamlessly.

He scored eight in his first half-season, followed that up with 22 in 2017-18 to win the Golden Boot, then replicated that feat last term.

Even this season, despite issues with fitness and personal problems, he’s still hit double figures.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
