Tanzania’s Yanga SC, Arsenal and top European clubs who managed an unbeaten season

Tanzania Mainland Premier League champions Yanga SC concluded the 2021-22 season with an unbeaten run after winning their final league fixture 1-0 against Mtibwa Sugar on Wednesday.

The Timu ya Wananchi needed a second-half goal courtesy of Denis Nkane to defeat the visiting side at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. By doing so, they crowned the season without losing a match and also ended their four-year wait to wrestle the title from Simba SC.

Under Fabio Capello, Milan ran through the entire 34-game league season unbeaten, a rare feat in footballing history (equalled in Serie A only by Juventus in the 2011-12 season, and Perugia in 1978-79, although the latter side failed to win the Serie A title).

The team’s unbeaten run totalled 58 matches between 1991 and 1993, a record in Italian football, encompassing the next season as well. For their achievements, the 1991-92 Milan side received the nickname “Gli invincibili” ("The invincibles," in Italian) in the media.

Arsenal under Arsene Wenger regained the Premier League without a single defeat. Over the 38 games played, their league record stood at 26 wins, 12 draws, and 0 losses.

The unbeaten run was threatened six matches into the campaign against Manchester United, as striker Ruud van Nistelrooy missed a penalty in injury time; the match then ended 0–0. At the turn of the calendar year, the Gunners won nine league matches in a row to consolidate first position.

Under former captain and fan favourite Antonio Conte, Juventus ended the season without any losses, breaking a record for the 20-team league format in Italy.

They finished the season on 84 points, four more than AC Milan, and their unbeaten season was confirmed in the final matchday against Atalanta which they won 3-1. In total, they won 23 matches, drew 15 and suffered zero defeats.

The Bhoys won all three domestic tournaments, completing a domestic treble (the 11th in Scottish football) while going undefeated in 47 domestic games and were nicknamed the “Invincibles”.

Under Brendan Rodgers, Celtic completed a full 38-match season without losing, becoming the first team to go an entire Scottish top-flight season without a defeat since Rangers in 1898-99 (when only 18 league matches were played).

They finished the season with 106 points, 34 wins, no defeats, 106 goals scored, and a title-winning points margin of 30 points.

With a 4-0 win over Aberdeen on the final day of the season, Rangers sealed an undefeated league season and became the first club since Celtic in 2016-17 to reach the 100-point milestone.

Rangers won all 19 of their home games at Ibrox and equalled the league record of 26 clean sheets in the campaign. The Gers, who were under Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, set a new British record by conceding only 13 goals in their 32 wins, and six draws.

After being presented with their 28th title with a game to spare on Saturday, Yanga had one mission - to finish the season unbeaten. The team under coach Nasreddine Nabi achieved the fete as they defeated Mtibwa Sugar in their final fixture of the season on Wednesday.

In the process, Yanga amassed 71 points from 29 matches, 11 more than their rivals Simba, who finished second. They managed 21 wins, eight draws, and zero defeats.
