Steven Gerrard’s nightmare continues! Struggling Al-Ettifaq manager loses his number two as Ian Foster joins Championship club Plymouth Argyle

Despite recruiting international talents like Demarai Gray, Georginio Wijnaldum and Jordan Henderson, Al-Ettifaq currently sit eighth in the table, 28 points behind league leaders Al-Hilal. They have gone two months without a win with their last victory coming back on October 28 against Al-Wehda.

Foster teamed up with Gerrard after leaving his role as head coach of England's under-20 squad and his departure from Ettifaq means that the Liverpool legend must do everything required to revive the fortunes without the support of his close confidante.

Plymouth chairman Simon Hallett said: "I am thrilled to welcome a coach of Ian’s calibre to Plymouth Argyle as our new Head Coach. He was the perfect candidate to lead our great football club forward as we embark on our next five-year mission. Ian showed a passion and knowledge for the club throughout the interview process, and showcased in some detail how he sees the best way to take forward our exciting and dynamic young squad.

“Having worked with some of the best players this country has produced, he has a passion for developing young footballers, as well as playing expansive, attacking football which fits perfectly with how we want the club to progress. I am excited to see how he takes the team forward and very much welcome him to Plymouth Argyle.”

Foster had earlier worked with the World Cup-winning England Under-17 side where he trained current Manchester City star Phil Foden. However, a tough task awaits Foster at Plymouth as they sit in the 18th spot with just 29 points from 26 games and are winless in their last four league games.

Gerrard will look to make the most of the break in the Saudi League due to the upcoming Asian Cup to figure out a potential assistant for the business end of the season. Despite recruiting international talents like Gray, Wijnaldum and Henderson, their performances have not improved which might force the club to look for more reinforcements. Whereas, Gerrard will hope to have a new No. 2 in the dugout when Ettifaq return to action against Al-Khaleej on February 15.
