  • Goalkeeper comes off bench and plays outfield
  • Scores brilliant goal to make it 2-1
  • His team go on to snatch a point
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Scottish Championship side Arbroath were trailing 2-0 to Raith Robers when substitute goalkeeper Ali Adams, who had earlier come on to play outfield, scored a brilliant goal to haul his team back into the game. Adams turned and smashed home a vicious effort from well outside the penalty area to halve the deficit. Arbroath then went on to seal a point in the final 10 minutes when Leighton McIntosh equalised from the penalty spot.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arbroath manager Jim McIntyre is working with a small squad and was only able to name four substitutes for the match. The boss had already made three changes to his team when Aaron Steele picked up an injury and had to be replaced. McIntyre then had little option but to send on goalkeeper Adams to play outfield. Fortunately for Arbroath, it ended up being something of a masterstroke.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR ARBROATH

Adams' goal will be a career highlight for a goalkeeper who has previously played for Gretna, Berwick Rangers and Lenlithgow Rose. It seems unlikely the stopper will be used outfield again by manager McIntyre, but the Arbroath boss certainly knows who he can turn to if he needs a spectacular goal.
