    WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal were dealt a major blow when Trossard received a second yellow card in first half injury-time. The Belgian was booked in the 34th minute for holding onto Savinho, and moments later he was given his marching orders for kicking the ball away after he'd been penalised for barging into Bernardo Silva.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The challenge on Silva might have been enough to warrant a second yellow, but the Premier League later confirmed that Trossard was shown the card for kicking the ball away. This prompted anger from Arsenal fans, who pointed out that Jeremy Doku had escaped punishment for doing similar earlier in the half.

  • WHAT THE FANS SAID

Reacting on X, @ConMarbleHalls wrote: "Doku first no yellow. Trossard half a second after the whistle second yellow. Serious RVP away to Barcelona vibes."

Meanwhile, @afcevan added: "I would just love someone to tell me why Trossard has received his second yellow there and Doku wasn't booked earlier in the game. The only reason I can see is because he's wearing red not blue. The blue with 115 cheating charges over it."

"So Doku is allowed to kick away the ball, but Trossard isn’t," wrote @ArsenalReport. "This is the kind of corruption at the FA that will result in dire consequences for the game in general."

@Stillmanator complained: "Incredibly annoying that Doku is not booked for the exact same thing. But also very dumb from Trossard given what we have already seen. Both things are true here. Horrible officiating but we had fair warning about how selectively this stupid rule is applied."

@Rory_Talks_Ball added: "Trossard is an idiot. But we’re now discussing whether Doku is kicking the ball away, or kicking it back to us, that’s our halftime analysis. Do you understand how stupid this rule is for football?"

    WHAT NEXT?

The debate over yellow cards for kicking the ball away is seemingly here to stay after Arsenal's Declan Rice was punished against Brighton. It's a law that Gunners fans will be desperate to see changed after being on the receiving end of two high-profile incidents now - and left wondering why others aren't being given the same treatment.
