Roma most expensive signings - How Giallorossi spent €1.4 billion on incoming transfers

Roma are arguably one of the biggest teams in Serie A, even if their honours list doesn't quite match that of clubs such as Juventus, Milan and Inter.

They have had some absolute superstars wearing their iconic red jersey throughout their history, many of those players coming through the club's youth academy.

Francesco Totti is undoubtedly the most recognisable name, with Daniele De Rossi another true homegrown hero.

They have also brought in plenty of legends from elsewhere, though.

Who doesn't remember the iconic Gabriel Batistuta for example?!

And although Roma have not made a habit out of spending big, they have also not hesitated to splash the cash if they felt the opportunity was right.

But how much have they spent on transfers exactly since the turn of the millennium and which players cost them the most?

Roma top 10 most expensive player signings

  • Juan Iturbe Roma trainingGetty Images

    10Juan Iturbe | €24.50m | Hellas Verona | 2014

Iturbe signed for Roma after an impressive 2013-14 season on loan with Hellas Verona in which he scored eight goals and provided four assists for the newly promoted club, helping them to a 10th-place finish in Serie A.

The winger signed a five-year deal with Roma for €24.50 million, just weeks after permanently signing for Verona.

Iturbe's first goal for Roma came against CSKA Moscow in the 2014-15 Champions League and he also went on to score against Juventus and in the Derby della Capitale against Lazio, helping Roma finish in second place in the Serie A.

He never quite reached the heights expected of him, though, and the Argentine winger was eventually loaned to Bournemouth in 2016, Torino and Tijuana in 2017 before joining UNAM in 2018.

In 2020, he was loaned to Pachuca before signing with Greek club Aris on a permanent deal in 2021.

    9Javier Pastore | €24.70m | PSG | 2018

After coming through the ranks at Argentine club Talleres, Pastore arrived in Italy with Palermo in 2009 after being linked with top European clubs including Manchester United, Porto, Milan and Chelsea

Pastore played almost 70 games for Palermo, scoring 14 goals in a two year spell before Paris Saint-Germain came calling in 2011, signing him for a premium €40 million fee.

The elegant attacking midfielder spent seven years at PSG, making 186 appearances and scoring 29 goals, before joining Roma in 2018 for €24.70m.

Pastore spent three years at Roma, making just 30 appearances before joining Elche in La Liga in 2021.

  • Vincenzo Montella Roma Parma 091701Getty Images

    8Vincenzo Montella | €25.82m | Sampdoria | 1999

One of the few players who also went on to manage the team they played for, Montella joined Roma in 1999 for €25.82 million from Sampdoria.

Then manager Fabio Capello was said to have less confidence in strikers who were short in height, but despite this, Montella was the top scorer for Roma as he scored 18 goals in the 1999-2000 season.

The following year, Capello went ahead and fulfilled his "tall-striker wish" by bringing in Gabriel Batistuta, which meant Montella ended up warming the bench.

Even then, he was one of the main reasons why Roma won their third Scudetto in 2000-01, scoring in their title-deciding win over Parma in June 2001.

He went on to play 215 matches for Roma over eight years, scoring 94 goals.

  • Kumbulla Inter Roma Coppa ItaliaGetty

    7Marash Kumbulla | €26.50m | Hellas Verona | 2021

After having him on a two-season loan between 2020 and 2022, Roma went big on Kumbulla in the summer of 2022, spending €26.50 million on the Albania international.

The centre-back has been a key figure for Roma, but he spent the beginning of the 2022-23 season nursing an injury that limited his game-time in Serie A as well as Europa League.

  • Steven NzonziGetty Images

    6Steven Nzonzi | €26.65m | Sevilla | 2018

Steven Nzonzi spent three years at Sevilla between 2015 to 2018 and won the Europa League at the expense of Liverpool in his first season.

The former Stoke City midfielder was one of the most liked players by then coach Jorge Sampaoli and went on to make 90 appearances for Sevilla in three years.

In 2018, Roma came calling, agreeing to pay a €26.65 million fee for the Frenchman, signing him on a four-year deal.

However, Nzonzi lasted just one season at Roma as he was loaned to Galatasaray in 2019 and Rennes in 2020, before joining Qatari club Al-Rayyan in 2021 for free.

  • Spinazzola RomaGetty Images

    5Leonardo Spinazzola | €29.50m | Juventus | 2019

Spinazzola began his career at youth level at Juventus in 2012 and was continuously loaned to a host of clubs until 2018.

Roma eventually signed him in the summer of 2019 for €29.50 million and since then, he has gone on to play over 60 matches for theGiallorossi.

Many people might remember him from the European Championships in 2021 as well as he played a crucial role in helping Italy lift the cup at Wembley after beating England in the final.

He was the fastest player at the tournament, clocking a top speed of 33.8 km/h.

  • Cassano RomaGetty Images

    4Antonio Cassano | €31m | Bari | 2001

Cassano is one of those strikers who had the potential to be one of the greatest in the game, but just couldn't quite keep his head down and focus on football.

The Italy international played for his local club Bari before moving to Roma in 2001 at the age of 19 for an extraordinary €31 million transfer fee for such a young player.

He scored 39 goals in 118 games for Roma in five years before Real Madrid came calling in 2006.

At that time, Cassano became only the second Italian to feature for Real Madrid after his former Roma team-mate Christian Panucci.

The forward also went on to feature for Sampdoria, Milan, Inter, Parma and Verona later in his career.

  • Batistuta RomaGetty Images

    3Gabriel Batistuta | €36.15m | Fiorentina | 2000

Argentine cult hero Batistuta was at the peak of his powers during his nine-year spell at Fiorentina, in which he scored over 150 goals in over 260 games.

After attaining legendary status at the club, Batistuta joined Roma for €36.15 million in 2000 in his quest to win the Scudetto, thus becoming the most expensive transfer made for a player above the age of 30. This record was later broken when Leonardo Bonucci joined AC Milan in 2017.

Batistuta won the Scudetto with Roma in the 2000-01 season, scoring 20 league goals.

In that season, he scored a thunderous volley against his former team Fiorentina in Rome and refused to celebrate the goal, before being reduced to tears after the game.

The Argentina striker was inducted into Fiorentina's Hall of Fame in 2014.

  • Tammy Abraham 2022-23Getty

    2Tammy Abraham | €40m | Chelsea | 2021

After six years at Chelsea that included loan moves to Bristol City, Swansea City and Aston Villa along with 58 appearances for The Blues, Abraham moved to Roma in the summer of 2021.

Roma signed the England striker for €40 million on a five-year contract, with Chelsea also including a premium buy-back clause that can only be triggered after the player has completed two seasons with Roma.

Abraham has settled in well at the Italian club, quickly becoming a key figure up top.

  • Patrik Schick RomaGetty

    1Patrik Schick | €42m | Sampdoria | 2018

After excelling at a young age at Sampdoria, Schick made the move to Roma in the year 2017 for a club record €42 million.

At that time, Roma director Monchi labeled Schick as "one of the brightest prospects in international football."

After three rather underwhelming seasons with Roma, which included a loan move to RB Leipzig, Schick was offloaded to Bayer Leverkusen in 2020 for €26.50m.

The Czech Republic striker has excelled at Leverkusen and is well and truly living up to the sky-high expectations at last.
