  • Mbappe's contract expires in summer
  • Now free to speak to Real & any other suitors
  • PSG still hopeful of tying him down to an extension
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Real initially formalised their interest in Mbappe back in 2021, but saw multiple bids for the PSG talisman turned down, including one that reached the €200 million (£174m/$221m) mark. Mbappe ended up signing a new deal at Parc des Princes in May 2022, but that agreement is due to expire this summer and there has been no sign of another renewal being put in place as yet, with Real Madrid still eager to bring him onto their books.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Real are now aiming to force Mbappe's hand, having reportedly set a mid-January deadline for the 25-year-old to make a final decision on his future. PSG are expecting another big offer from the Spanish giants in the coming days, and according to The Athletic, they have already "drawn up budgets and plans" in preparation for the potential departure of their star forward.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The report adds that PSG are still eager for Mbappe to stay put and they haven't given up hope of tying him to another new contract, although they won't be pressured into overpaying. The Ligue 1 champions would save around €40m (£35m/$44m) in wages if Mbappe does join Real this month, but they are currently in talks to extend the contract of his brother Ethan, which could have a bearing on his final decision.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MBAPPE?

Mbappe is now free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with Real or any other potential suitor, but it has been reported that the Liga outfit will move on to alternative targets if he does not meet their January deadline. For now, the World Cup winner will remain focused on his duties at PSG, who are set to return to action in a Trophee des Champions final clash against Toulouse on Wednesday.
