  • Varane to leave United as a free agent
  • The club chose not to trigger extension option
  • Defender to play final home game against Newcastle
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The French defender looked close to tears as he geared up to break the news of his departure from Old Trafford, after spending three seasons on United's books following his arrival from Real Madrid in the summer of 2021. Although Varane had a clause in his contract which could have seen him extend his stay by 12 months, the club refrained from activating it and hence the centre-back will leave as a free agent at the end of the season.

  • WHAT VARANE SAID

Varane bid an emotional goodbye to United fans in a video on his social channels, stating: "To you guys, supporters of Manchester United. It's been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wearing that shirt. The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Man United player, it was insane. The atmosphere was amazing. I fell in love with the club and the fans. You have to play for Man Utd to understand what that represents. For my kids, it's home here. It's going to be a special place for me, for life. When the fans go to Wembley, it's something they remember for life. To share that moment with them was absolutely amazing."

Varane also shared his thoughts about Ratcliffe and INEOS' arrival as United's new part owners, adding: "Despite the fact we had a difficult season, I'm very positive for the future. The new owners are coming in with a clear plan and a great strategy. I will see you at Old Trafford to say goodbye for the last game at home this season and it's going to be a very emotional day for me, for sure."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Varane has played 93 matches for United and won the Carabao Cup trophy in 2023 when the Red Devils beat Newcastle United at Wembley. However, the 31-year-old has struggled with fitness issues this season and has not taken the field since the 4-3 loss to Chelsea on April 4.

    WHAT NEXT FOR VARANE?

Varane did, however, appear to reveal that he would be available for the final home game against the Magpies on Wednesday. After that match, United travel to Brighton for the final league game of the season. The defender also has the opportunity to bow out of the club on a high as the Red Devils face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 25 at Wembley, and securing a victory in that match would help him clinch his second trophy with United.
