  • PSG interested in signing Gavi
  • Midfielder has €1bn release clause

PSG identified the Spain international as a possible transfer target last summer as they look to bring in a promising young player to revolutionise their midfield and L'Equipe reports Gavi remains high on their list of options.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Signing the 19-year-old will be no easy feat for the French champions, however. Barca have no interest in selling one of their prized assets and his contract, which runs until 2026, has a €1 billion (£858m/$1.1bn) release clause.

  • WHAT XAVI SAID

The one possible route to signing Gavi could be Barcelona's ongoing financial woes. The Camp Nou side may have to offload some star players in the near future before they can invest in new players, but coach Xavi has demanded they fight hard to ensure Gavi is not allowed to leave. He said in February: "Gavi must stay, he has to be one of the captains of the team in the future. We are always talking about departures, but Gavi has to be the future of Barca."

WHAT NEXT FOR GAVI AND BARCELONA?

Gavi is currently sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury and will not feature when his team take on PSG in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The reigning La Liga champions meet the French side in Paris on Wednesday.
