Lionel Messi sad 2022-23

PSG player ratings vs Ajaccio: Lionel Messi tormented by boos while Kylian Mbappe brace leads team to brink of Ligue 1 title

The boos rang down on Messi as he made his first appearance since being handed a two-week suspension for missing training and taking an unsanctioned trip to Saudi Arabia, which was ultimately shortened after he apologised. His reception soured what was an otherwise much-improved showing from the Parisians, with Mbappe bagging two goals in a 5-0 win that moves the club even closer to a Ligue 1 title.

Fabian Ruiz opened the scoring for the home side, snatching onto a Danilo Pereira's through-ball before evading a defender and lifting his shot over a sprawling keeper. The Parisians had a second just after 30 minutes when Achraf Hakimi finished from close range after Mbappe's twisting effort was saved. Mbappe finally got one of his own early in the second half, his toe-poke squirming under the goalie for a 3-0 lead. He added an audacious second to put the score well beyond doubt, with an own goal from Ajaccio extending the lopsided scoreline.

A Hakimi red card for a reckless swing at an Ajaccio player caused PSG to finish the contest with 10 men - but that wasn't much a problem. Ligue 1, then, is sorted. But the Messi issue, boos and all, will drag on until the end of the season.

GOAL rates PSG's players from the Parc des Princes...

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Gianluigi Donnarumma (6/10):

Had very little to do. Completed every single pass, which is expected.

    Marquinhos (7/10):

Played unusually high up the pitch, perhaps unsurprising considering PSG's dominance of possession.

    Sergio Ramos (7/10):

Pinged it around, including a lovely direct ball to set up Mbappe's second.

    Danilo Pereira (7/10):

Involved in Fabian's opener with an impressive line-splitting pass. A solid performance otherwise.

    Midfield

    Achraf Hakimi (4/10):

Lively down the right, made some good runs early. Scored PSG's second before being sent off for taking a stupid swing at an opponent.

    Marco Verratti (7/10):

Kept things tidy in midfield, progressed the ball well to unlock an Ajaccio block.

    Fabian Ruiz (8/10):

Opened the scoring with a nice finish from close range. Enjoying his best spell in Paris at the moment.

    Juan Bernat (6/10):

An decent shift, even if his crossing sometimes fell short.

    Attack

    Lionel Messi (6/10):

Booed relentlessly by very angry PSG fans. Broke out the usual array of tricks, feints and flicks. Was uncharacteristically inefficient in front of goal.

    Hugo Ekitike (6/10):

Still hasn't found his position. Mostly forced around by a roaming Mbappe and Messi duo. Doesn't have a clear future at the club, though expected departures could give him a greater role next year.

    Kylian Mbappe (9/10):

A constant threat. Made a few defenders look very silly, should've been awarded a penalty in the first half. Scored a slightly flukey goal, then a ridiculous second.

  • Renato Sanches PSG argue 2022-23Getty Images

    Subs & Manager

    Vitinha (6/10):

Galtier insisted on giving him a run out, despite the number of promising youngsters elsewhere on the bench.

    Renato Sanches (6/10):

Brought back from yet another injury layoff. Ran around a lot to mark an unspectacular 30 minutes.

    E.C Bitshiabu (N/A):

    20-minute cameo for Danilo.

    Carlos Soler (N/A):

Didn't have time to make an impact.

    Warren Zaire-Emery (N/A):

Sliced a shot over in pretty much his only involvement.

    Christophe Galtier (7/10):

Got a much better showing out of his side in the typical 3-4-3 formation. Mbappe was near his best, while Ruiz chipped in, too. Ligue 1 is all-but sorted, and he can be satisfied with the performance. Still, remains to be seen if Galtier has done enough to save his job ahead of next season. Probably not.
