MLS Power Rankings: Lionel Messi's Inter Miami stay on top as contenders close in

The 2024 MLS field is more open than ever. There's no clear front-runner in the race for the MLS Supporters' Shield, and no clear favorite to take home silverware at the end of the campaign.

Reigning MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew are flying high in continental competition, but their league form is suffering as a result. Elsewhere, 2023 Supporters' Shield winners FC Cincinnati are soaring, while Inter Miami look better than ever with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez leading the way in a tight Eastern Conference.

Then there's the contenders who are unexpectedly creeping up on the frontrunners: the New York Red Bulls, Real Salt Lake, Minnesota United and the Vancouver Whitecaps, all of whom have had blistering starts to the season.

With 13 Matchdays complete, which club leads the pack, and who is falling short of expectations? GOAL presents the latest MLS Power Rankings...

Previous update: April 30

  • 29New England Revolution ↔️

Things just continue to get worse and worse each week for the Reves. It appears that they've lost Dylan Borreo to a serious injury, and they sit bottom of MLS with just seven points from 11 games.

  • 28Chicago Fire ⬇️

Frank Klopas is so, so overwhelmed with the Fire at the moment. They're a disaster all over the pitch and are winless in five, with just two victories on the season.

  • 27Portland Timbers ⬇️

Portland are ... well, not doing so well. Phil Neville's squad is nearing free-fall, with the club winless in nine-straight matches. They continue to leak goals, despite their attack being rather consistent at the other end of the field.

  • 26Sporting Kansas City ⬇️

Sporting are in horrendous form at the moment, and two recent losses against Real Salt Lake and the Houston Dynamo have only added to the pain. Their last win came on March 30.

  • Walker Zimmerman Nashville SC 2024Getty Images

    25Nashville SC ⬇️

It's hard to overstate how poor Nashville have been this season. Behind the power curve in every sense, Gary Smith's job is on the line heading into Matchday 14.

They had an emphatic 4-1 victory on Matchday 12 over CF Montreal, but followed it up with a poor showing on the road against Charlotte.

  • 24FC Dallas ⬇️

FCD picked up a big rivalry week win over Austin FC at the weekend, defeating them 2-1. However, they're still in a slump. With just two wins in the past two months, Saturday's victory felt more like a one-off, rather than a sign of impending improvement.

  • 23Orlando City ⬇️

If there's one thing Oscar Pareja has learned in recent weeks, it's this: start Duncan McGuire. Orlando are a better team with him in the lineup, despite some inconsistent results of late.

They defeated a lackluster Philadelphia Union side 3-2 at the weekend, with that being their first win in four matches. A positive amid some poor form.

  • 22Austin FC ⬇️

Austin are coasting, really. They're not performing well, but they're also not performing at a terrible level. They drew a very good Whitecaps side 0-0 on Matchday 12, but responded with a poor loss to FC Dallas. There's room for improvement everywhere.

  • 21Atlanta United ⬇️

Atalanta's catastrophic season continues. Winless in six, they've been disastrous of late, meaning Gonzalo Pineda has the hottest seat across MLS right now.

  • Cristian Roldan Seattle Sounders 2024Getty Images

    20Seattle Sounders ⬆️

The Sounders are finally starting to look like they've found their footing, but their season-long form is still woeful. They'll take a 0-0 draw vs the LA Galaxy and a 2-1 win over rivals Portland in recent weeks, though.

  • 19CF Montreal ⬇️

Getting beat by Inter Miami has become a norm in MLS, but losing after going up 2-0 in front of your home fans? That stings. Montreal have just one win in their last eight; things aren't great.

  • Jackson Yeuill San Jose Earthquakes 2024USA Today Images

    18San Jose Earthquakes ⬆️

The Earthquakes might be on to something. Three-straight results, they completed a three-goal comeback against the Colorado Rapids at the weekend, defeating them 3-2, with Cristian Espinoza netting the winner.

  • 17Houston Dynamo ⬇️

The Dynamo are probably right where they should be. A nice win over Sporting and a 0-0 draw vs St Louis have them right in the hunt for a Western Conference playoff spot.

  • St. Louis CITY SC 2024USA Today Images

    16St. Louis City SC ⬇️

Unbeaten in five, CITY look to slowly be getting their gears in order. However, two of their three total victories - both in recent weeks - have come against struggling clubs.

At best, they look like a fringe playoff team, as they continue to go through their sophomore slump.

  • Gazdag DánielMLS

    15Philadelphia Union ⬇️

The Union are winless in five. They've looked low in confidence, especially in their loss against a struggling Orlando City side at the weekend. Daniel Gazdag missed a penalty for the first time in his Union career, taking away from what would have been a celebratory night as he became the club's all-time leading scorer.

  • 14Charlotte FC ⬆️

Two back-to-back wins, both being shutouts, has Dean Smith buzzing. Charlotte has found a patch of form; now they need to ride it.

  • 13Toronto FC ⬇️

John Herdman and Federico Bernardeschi finally look to be figuring things out in Canada. The Italian star is finding his feet under his new head coach, and TFC have been finding the back of the net on a consistent basis of late.

However, in a hotly-contested Matchday 13 game, they fell to NYCFC in feisty fashion.

  • Cole Bassett Colorado Rapids 2024USA Today Images

    12Colorado Rapids ⬇️

They continue to surprise... in both a good and bad way. Let's start with the former, though. The Rapids scored two really, really good early goals against a struggling San Jose side at the weekend. The bad? They conceded three unanswered to lose.

A cheeky 2-0 win over NYCFC on Matchday 12 was a nice highlight, though.

  • Christian Benteke DC UnitedUSA Today Images

    11D.C. United ⬆️

It's Christian Benteke's world and we're just living in it. He now has 11 goals on the season, tied atop the race for the Golden Boot.

Dubbed Air Benteke after his second hat-trick of the season - all of which were headers - the Belgian led D.C. to a brilliant 3-2 victory over Atlanta United.

  • 10New York City FC ⬆️

NYCFC are a squad in form at the moment, despite a minor Matchday 12 setback against the Rapids. They've won four of their last five, including a recent 3-2 victory over Toronto.

  • 9Los Angeles Galaxy ⬇️

LA have had a rough three weeks. Their last win came on April 21, and they dropped points on Matchday 12 against a very poor Seattle side. A subsequent 2-2 draw with Western Conference leaders, Real Salt Lake, though, was a positive result.

  • 8Vancouver Whitecaps ⬇️

The Whitecaps have been a lovely surprise in 2024, but they aren't without their flaws. A Matchday 13 loss to LAFC followed two-straight draws in very winnable games. They're currently stagnating, and it remains to be seen if they can jump out of this minor slump.

  • 7Minnesota United ⬆️

The Loons are Looning - and in the best way possible. They had a Matchday 13 bye, but they picked up a stunning 2-1 road victory over Atlanta United the week prior. They're the only team in MLS level on points-per-game with Inter Miami, sitting second in the West.

They trail Real Salt Lake by just two points, but have two games in hand over the Conference leaders. New head coach Eric 'Chef' Ramsay is cooking up something special in St. Paul.

  • 6Columbus Crew ⬇️

The Crew look like reigning MLS Cup champions, and have embarked on a brilliant continental competition run in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

As noted, though, their league form has suffered. A 2-1 loss to rivals FC Cincinnati at home will sting, and it won't get easier, with five-straight road matches on the horizon.

  • 5Los Angeles FC ⬆️

LAFC are in a odd spot. Their defense has been leaky, but their offense has bailed them out in recent weeks. Cristian Olivera also seems to finally be finding himself, and in stunning fashion, they thumped a very, very good Whitecaps side 3-0 at the weekend.

  • Emil Forsberg NYRB 2024USA Today Sports

    4New York Red Bulls ⬇️

RBNY needed a big victory after getting trounced by Inter Miami on Matchday 12, and a 4-2 win against the Revs was just that and more, as they sit third in the Eastern Conference.

  • 3Real Salt Lake ↔️

RSL are cruising. They're unbeaten in eight-straight matches in league play, and are coming off a 2-2 draw against a very good Galaxy team on the road. Chicho Arango is among the best in MLS this season, tied at the top with 11 goals in the race for the Golden Boot with Benteke and Suarez.

  • 2FC Cincinnati ⬆️

FCC are cruising in the Eastern Conference. With a game in-hand, they trail Miami by just three points and they're immediately looking like title contenders once again.

Matchday 13 saw them take a result on the road in the 'Hell IS Real' derby against the Crew, putting in a statement performance in a 2-1 victory.

  • Lionel Messi Inter MiamiGetty

    1Inter Miami ↔️

Miami and Messi look unstoppable at the moment, especially with the way others are stepping up at the moment. Suarez is tied at the top of the MLS Golden Boot standings with 11 goals, new signing Matias Rojas is a man on fire, and teenager Benjamin Cremaschi is emerging from an injury layoff at the perfect time to lead their midfield.
