'We want to do it again' - Martin Odegaard sets Arsenal title mission after opening-day win over Coventry City

  • Gunners launch title defence

Arsenal began their 2026-27 Premier League title defence with a commanding 3-0 victory over Championship winners Coventry at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night. Riccardo Calafiori pounced on a loose throw-in to set up Kai Havertz for the 15th-minute opener, before Bukayo Saka doubled the advantage from debutant Christos Tzolis' delivery. Odegaard sealed the points after the break, earning the Player of the Match award on a milestone night that marked Mikel Arteta's 150th top-flight win in just 249 games.

    Captain outlines title hunger

Odegaard insisted the champions are determined to attack the new season rather than simply defend their crown, while expressing relief at returning to full fitness following an injury-plagued campaign. Speaking to the BBC, Odegaard said: "We don't feel we have to defend anything. We want to do it again and that's the mindset. Last year is finished now, we want to do it again, and we want to attack it and fight for it again."

Reflecting on his physical battles, the skipper told Sky Sports: "Last season was a big struggle for me, I had too many injuries and weird situations and bad luck. I could never find a rhythm. It's hard when you are in and out and not 100% fit. It was hard. But I feel good now. My body is good after a good World Cup and pre-season. I'm feeling 100%."

  • Formidable depth drives standards

The 27-year-old acknowledged that opening fixtures often bring initial nerves but praised the squad depth that allows Arsenal to maintain elite standards throughout the pitch. Assessing the performance, Odegaard added: "The first game is always a bit nervy. They played well, gave us a good fight and a good battle. It was key to get the first goal and control the game. It was solid.

"We looked good. We could have created and scored more. We can be more precise and sharp around the box. It's a good performance, but we can do even better. The quality in the squad is unbelievable. You can put anyone on the pitch and they can perform at the highest level. We push one another to get better."
