Man Utd set to break the bank to fix Ruben Amorim's defence as Red Devils eye stunning €100m summer bid for Barcelona star Ronald Araujo

The Uruguayan defender has established himself as a cornerstone of the Catalan club’s backline and is widely regarded as one of the top centre-backs in European football. While Barcelona recently secured his long-term commitment with a contract running until 2031, the club’s ongoing financial struggles could force them to consider substantial offers. Juventus attempted to lure Araujo in January, but their bid fell short of Barcelona’s valuation.

According to Fichajes, Araujo has emerged as a prime candidate to reinforce United's defence. They are already preparing a €100 million (£84.1m/$105m) offer for the centre-back, which they think should suffice to land him at Old Trafford. However, United's Champions League qualification could be a decisive factor in convincing Araujo to switch to the Premier League.

Despite spending significantly on defensive reinforcements, United’s backline has struggled this season. They have conceded 35 goals in 25 Premier League games, which indicates their woes at the back. Last summer, the club spent £42 million ($53.6m) to acquire Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich and invested £52 million ($68m) in Leny Yoro from Lille. Yet, even with these additions and a managerial change, United’s defensive performances have remained inconsistent.

Should Manchester United successfully sign him, Araujo could be a long-term replacement for Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans. Both are expected to depart in the summer as their contracts near expiration. In the short term, Amorm's troops will aim to turn their fortunes around when they face Everton in the Premier League on Saturday.
