  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The veteran Uruguayan striker is dropping into the free agent pool as he severs ties with Brazilian outfit Gremio. He has remained a prolific presence in South America, but is also nursing long-standing knee problems that will bring his career to a close at some point in the near future. One more challenge in America, alongside former Barcelona team-mate Messi, is still being considered.

    WHAT SUAREZ SAID

Suarez has told Teledoce when asked if he will be joining Messi in the United States: “Many things can be said, many teams were named and we have to live with that. I will talk to my lawyer to see what the possibilities are. I didn't want to know anything until the Brasileirao was over. Inter Miami could be a possibility. I have the best player in the world and a great friend with whom we have always talked about things in the future, but I still need to rest and then make a decision.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 36-year-old ex-Liverpool and Ajax frontman added when pressed further on the talk of him heading for MLS now that a year-long stint at Gremio has come to a close: “After drawing conclusions from an incredible 12 months, now it's time to relax a little. What I want now is to spend time with my children, my wife. We had a very busy year. They deserve, and I need too, to be with them. There were many trips and commitments. I will analyse the possibilities.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR SUAREZ?

Suarez hit 29 goals for Gremio through 54 appearances, proving that he still knows his way to the back of the net. Inter Miami are ready to buy into those qualities, in a deal that will keep them inside the MLS salary cap, as Messi and Co take aim at more major honours in 2024.
