Liverpool dealt Jeremie Frimpong blow! New right-back set to miss Newcastle and Arsenal clashes after sustaining injury in high-octane Anfield debut following £30m summer move

Slot has confirmed Frimpong will miss their next two Premier League games against Newcastle and Arsenal after he sustained a hamstring injury against Bournemouth. The right-back arrived from Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the summer but will now face some time on the sidelines ahead of the international break. 

Speaking to the media, Slot said: "The medical team were completely right about Jeremie [Frimpong] to tell me to take him off because he is out until the end of the international break and that happened during the game.

“I think I got criticised for taking him off, didn’t I? It had nothing to do with how he played but we felt he had an issue with his hamstring and by we, I mean the medical staff. It was a good call to take him off. We expect to have him back after the international break.”

The blow of Frimpong's absence could have been softened if they had Conor Bradley available to fill in. However, the 22-year-old is already out with his own injury which he picked up against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley. However, Slot has revealed Bradley did manage to train for "a few minutes" with the first team.

It is now expected that Frimpong will not be fit to play again until after the international break and, with Bradley likely unavailable, Wataru Endo or Dominik Szoboszlai could be given the start for at least the clash against Newcastle United on Monday.

Slot said: “At the moment, we only have two injuries but unfortunately, it is two in the same position. The good thing is we have other players that can play there. Wataru Endo played there. Dominik Szoboszlai.

“Joe Gomez is definitely one of them but for him to already play 20 minutes – that is already quite a lot. I wouldn’t say he has had a set-back but he wasn’t able to train three days in a row completely with the team. This is completely normal when you have been out for so long.

“He is training with the team, so let’s see where he is and if he can be involved on Monday. You cannot prepare for two injuries in one position.”
