Lionel Messi says he 'has more years' left to go as he reveals his goal has moved away from 2026 World Cup

<p>The 37-year-old is seemingly in the twilight years of his career but the legendary Argentine still <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/unstoppable-lionel-messi-hungry-to-win-even-more-trophies-inter-miami-star-collects-goat-award/bltfc0b58d6484cb61f" target="_blank">feels "unstoppable" at present</a>. The Inter Miami ace has no plans to hang up his boots just yet, but was a bit coy on whether or not he would represent his country at the 2026 World Cup.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>He said at the <a href="https://www.marca.com/en/football/mls/2024/10/17/67111d9f29c835faae1061f6-live.html" target="_blank">Marca America Award</a> night: "Coming to Inter Miami does not mean I will retire anytime soon, I still have more years to play."</p><p>Messi <a href="https://www.espn.co.uk/football/story/_/id/41850481/lionel-messi-value-happiness-2026-world-cup-argentina" target="_blank">added</a>: "In the moment, we will see. I don't like to accelerate time or look ahead. I try to enjoy every day. I hope I can keep playing at this level to feel good and be happy. When I get to do what I love I am happy. I value that more than reaching the 2026 [World Cup] tournament. I haven't set a goal to reach the World Cup, but more so to live day-to-day and be well."</p>

<p>Messi has, arguably, put together the most glittering football career of all time; winning Champions Leagues, a World Cup, and a host of the biggest trophies in the sport. And the fact that he wants to play for a while yet is great news for the game.</p>
