Lionel Messi, Inter Miami reportedly nearing agreement on multiyear contract extension to keep Argentina star in MLS

  • Both sides working toward deal

Both sides have reportedly expressed their willingness to continue their relationship, with the final details still to be sorted out before an announcement.

Once agreed upon by Messi and Inter Miami, the contract will be sent to Major League Soccer for final approval.

  • Deal expires at the end of the year

There was speculation, initially, that Messi's original Miami deal, signed in July 2023, would include a player option for the 2026 season.

However, that is not the case, and, as things stand, the 38-year-old will be out of contract at the end of November. Movement with Miami, though, has always seemed the most likely scenario, with rumors of a Saudi Pro League and Barcelona return both quashed shortly after they emerged.

  • 'Decision that rests on Messi'

Senior figures around Miami have repeatedly expressed interest in extending Messi. Owner Jorge Mas has said he hopes the Argentine signs a new deal to coincide with Miami opening a new facility, saying "I previously said that my wish, my dream would be for the No. 10 to inaugurate our new stadium in March. This is a decision that rests on Messi."

    Stadium could seal the decision

The Herons are on schedule to make another significant move, unveiling a new stadium, Miami Freedom Park. The 25,000-sea venue will replace temporary Chase Stadium, where the club have been playing for Messi's tenure.
