Lionel Messi bags career first achievement despite missing Argentina's final 2026 World Cup qualifier against Ecuador

Messi ended the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers as the continent's top scorer, with eight goals to his name. This was the first time he has achieved such a feat in his two-decade-long international career. This was also the lowest tally for a top goalscorer in the qualifying rounds since the current format was set up in 1996.

Messi, who has struggled with multiple injuries this year, was granted a rest by Scaloni so he can return to Inter Miami in peak condition ahead of their bid for MLS Cup glory. Last week, Messi shared an emotional moment with the fans after scoring twice in Argentina's 3-0 win over Venezuela, which is expected to be his final competitive game in his homeland at international level.

Messi has left his international career in limbo as he is yet to confirm his participation in Argentina's World Cup title defence in North America next year. 

Messi will be back in action for Inter Miami on Saturday as the David Beckham-owned side takes on Charlotte in a crucial MLS fixture.
