  • WHAT HAPPENED?

After nearly nine years in charge, Klopp stepped down as Liverpool manager at the end of the 2023-24 season - and ever since then, speculation has been rife about his next move. The German reportedly turned down the chance to lead the United States' men's national team as he enjoys his time away from the game. Now, the ex-Borussia Dortmund boss has played down any chance of him succeeding Gareth Southgate, who resigned after England's Euro 2024 final defeat.

    WHAT JURGEN KLOPP SAID

Speaking at the International Coach’s Conference, Klopp said: “There’s nothing. Job wise, there’s nothing at all. No club, no country. England? That would be the biggest loss of face in the history of football if I said I’ll make an exception for you.”

He added: “I will work at something again. I’m too young to just play paddle tennis and spend time with my grandchildren! Will it be coaching again? I’d rule that out at the moment. We’ll see how things look in a few months but right now, nothing is coming through.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Klopp will go down as one of the great Liverpool and Premier League managers after his hugely successful spell at Anfield. The German said he felt he was running out of energy so if he does return to management, it may be in a less demanding role or a different position in football entirely. Either way, the watching football world will be on tenterhooks in regards to his next move.
