  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Guardiola had earmarked Kounde as a priority target after shelving plans to sign Newcastle star Tino Livramento. But City’s interest has now been dealt a knockout blow, as the 26-year-old has been handed fresh terms in Spain.

    WHAT KOUNDE SAID

"I'm very happy here, I feel comfortable in the team and I'm very motivated by the club's ambition," he told reporters earlier this month. "Every year we fight for all the titles and I have no intention of leaving."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kounde is the latest name to pen a long-term deal in a sweeping project led by Barcelona’s board to secure the backbone of their future. Young jewels Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, Gavi and Pedri have all committed their best years to the club, ensuring stability for the long term as they aim for success domestically and in Europe.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Barcelona splashed out an initial €55 million (£47.5m/$64m) to bring Kounde in from Sevilla in 2022. Initially deployed as a central defender, he was quickly shifted to right-back by then-coach Xavi Hernandez, a move that has defined his role at the club ever since. Under new boss Hansi Flick, Kounde has continued to thrive on the flank, delivering both defensive solidity and attacking support. The Frenchman has clocked up 141 appearances in just three years, scoring seven goals, including a dramatic Copa del Rey final winner against fierce rivals Real Madrid earlier this year.

    WHAT NEXT FOR KOUNDE?

Kounde will likely feature next when Barcelona begin their La Liga title defence on Saturday with a tricky opening trip to Mallorca in the Balearic Islands.
