'Not going to speak about hypotheticals'

Although the prospect of a new deal for the former Barcelona star is percolating, Mascherano avoided making any announcements while hinting that positive news may be close.

“I’m not going to speak about hypotheticals, and I’m certainly not the one who should make that announcement,” Mascherano told reporters on Friday. “Hopefully it happens soon. It would be fantastic news not only for the club but for MLS and soccer in the United States as a whole. We just have to let things take their natural course and allow those who need to announce it to do so.”

    Another trophy in sight?

Mascherano also emphasized the team’s pursuit of the Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the league’s best regular-season team, which Miami won in record fashion last year.

“When we finished the Leagues Cup, our goal was to win the nine remaining matches. Now it’s down to seven, and each one is like a final. Mathematically, we’re in the same race as Vancouver,” he said.

    Warns against complacency

Despite D.C. United already being eliminated from playoff contention, Mascherano warned against complacency for his club.

“Every match has its challenges. It would be a mistake to think we’re facing a team with nothing to play for. This game is hugely important for us to get mathematically closer to the playoffs," he said.
