How Man Utd plan to manage Tyrell Malacia's reintegration as defender FINALLY makes return after 17-month layoff - explained

Malacia made a return to competitive action on Tuesday when he started for the Under-21s in their EFL Trophy defeat to Huddersfield. The 25-year-old was making his first appearance in 17 months after undergoing knee surgery following the Nations League final in June 2023.

Malacia had two major knee operations, forcing a prolonged spell on the sidelines. While new head coach Ruben Amorim will be keen to see how the 25-year-old fits into his system as a wing-back, United won't rush him back. PerBBC Sport, coaching staff are keen to ensure Malacia takes it steady after such a long spell out.

"He has worked so hard to get back," United's Under-21 coach Travis Binnion said. "He looks strong, he looks fit and his attitude is first class.

"Hopefully he kicks on now because he deserves a bit of good fortune and we could do with him."

Malacia could play for the Under-21s again when they take on Altrincham in the National League Cup on November 19, providing he recovers well from Tuesday's outing.

A new era under Amorim is underway following the Portuguese's arrival from Sporting CP. He will take charge of his first game when United take on Ipswich on November 24.
