Finance expert makes bombshell claim over Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney debt - which Wrexham co-owners can clear if they sell up NOW

Wrexham's famous owners have invested heavily in the club since purchasing the Welsh side in 2021 and have seen the club rise from non-league football all the way into League One. Yet the team's ascent through the divisions has come at a cost, with Maguire explaining just how much Reynolds and McElhenney have spent during their time with Wrexham. The football finance expert also thinks such huge debt could be recovered immediately if the duo put the club up for sale.

Maguire said on his Price of Football podcast: "Looking at the losses, Reynolds and McElhenney acquired the club in November 2020. Between that season and 2023, which is effectively two and a half years, they lost £8m, despite all of the benefits of the globalisation of the brand and having international sponsors. In terms of putting money into the club, I think you can probably at least double that, so they're probably down somewhere in the region of £18m to £20m as an overall estimate.

“If they were to sell the club today, then they would be able to sell and recoup all of those losses. If I was looking to buy Wrexham Football Club, I would want to buy it with Reynolds and McElhenney involved as part of the deal for five years, because they are part of the brand of Wrexham. It looks really genuine in terms of the enjoyment and the support that they get from the relationship with the club. They are lifelong fans so they would want to keep that relationship.”

More money is likely to be spent in January as manager Phil Parkinson has confirmed funds are available for transfers. Wrexham are currently battling with Wycombe and Birmingham City for promotion to the Championship, which would then leave the club just one step away from the promised land of the Premier League.

Reynolds and McElhenney will have to wait to see Wrexham in action once again. The team's League One clash with Reading has been postponed, after the Royals made it to the third round of the FA Cup, which means Wrexham's next game is not until January 16 against Shrewsbury Town.
