Inter Miami have hinted that Lionel Messi is a "few weeks" away from agreeing a contract extension, in what is "very important" news for MLS.

WHAT HAPPENED?
The Argentine superstar made his way to the United States in the summer of 2023 having starred in Europe for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. Messi agreed to an initial two-and-a-half year deal.

That agreement is due to come to a close at the end of the 2025 campaign, but a clause can be triggered that keeps him in South Florida for another 12 months. Inter Miami have always stated their confidence in keeping Messi on board for 2026 - taking him through the next World Cup finals.

Inter Miami boss Javier Mascherano told reporters when asked for an update on Messi’s future: “To sign Jordi for the next two years is important to show stability, and hopefully, in a few weeks we can have some news about Leo. I think it will be very, very important for the club, the fans, and for MLS.”
