    WHAT SOUTHGATE SAID

Speaking to The Athletic, Southgate opened up on the one question he hates being asked, where he said: "(Laughs) It’s being asked for a selfie when you’re in the middle of an airport and you’re trying to keep your head down, with the cap on, and trying to avoid it.

"Normally, I’m trying to get through somewhere without any attention. Of course you always want to help people out if they want a picture, but you’re trying to stay incognito and not create a fuss, really."

The England boss was then questioned about one thing that may surprise readers to learn, where he added: "The only thing I am doing at the moment is trying to learn German for the summer.

"I was conscious when we went on the recces (reconnaissance trips) and to the draws, I actually hadn’t got a clue. I wasn’t very proud of that. So I’m trying to at least be able to have some interaction with people there."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Southgate has been England boss since 2016 and Euro 2024 will be his fourth major tournament in charge of the Three Lions. His current contract with the national team is set to expire in December and he is yet to agree on an extension.
