Cristiano Ronaldo makes World Cup history! CR7 equals record for most goals in qualifiers after Portugal spared from horror defeat in Hungary

Portugal came from a goal down to secure all three points at Puskas Arena on Tuesday night. Ronaldo scored from the spot in the victory, taking his goal tally in World Cup qualifiers to 39. That draws him level with Carlos Ruiz of Guatemala and three ahead of Argentina icon Lionel Messi.

Despite turning 41 in a matter of months, former Real Madrid star Ronaldo is still showing he can contribute towards Portugal's attack. That is now three goals in two World Cup qualifying games as Roberto Martinez's side try to secure their place in next year's World Cup.

Ronaldo has now scored 141 goals for Portugal in 223 appearances. Over the course of his illustrious career, the Al-Nassr ace has bagged a remarkable 943 goals. The veteran has set his sights on reaching the 1,000 mark.

Ex-Manchester United hero Ronaldo will hope to add to his goals tally for his country when Portugal resume their World Cup qualifying campaign next month with home matches against the Republic of Ireland and Hungary.
