'Criminal offence!' - Furious Man Utd fans tear into 'clueless' Ruben Amorim for dropping Benjamin Sesko to the bench for vital clash with Liverpool

  • Sesko benched at Anfield: Run of goals not enough for striker

Fans have been quick to ask questions of what Amorim is thinking, with Sesko being dropped after netting his last two appearances for United against Brentford and Sunderland. His latest effort, against the Black Cats, helped the Red Devils to a crucial victory prior to the October international break.

Sesko went on to play 180 minutes for Serbia across two World Cup qualifiers - against Kosovo and Switzerland - that failed to produce a single goal. He would have been looking to get back into the groove after returning to England.

Amorim shuffles pack: Cunha leads the line for Red Devils

Amorim, who has shuffled his pack on a regular basis across a testing spell as United manager, has found no place for Sesko in his starting XI against Liverpool. Matheus Cunha, who could be considered more of a creative No.10, will lead the line for the Red Devils when they take on the reigning Premier League champions.

The likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Amad and Mason Mount will provide support to Cunha, with club captain Bruno Fernandes another playmaking influence in the middle of the park. If Sesko is to see any game time, then he will do so having initially taken up a seat among the substitutes.

  • What Man Utd fans said about Sesko benching

United fans are baffled as to why Sesko would be taken out of the side - given the physical qualities that he would bring to the fight against Virgil van Dijk and Co, while also boasting a useful eye for goal. It was that ability in the final third that convinced the Red Devils to part with £74 million ($99m) when snapping Sesko up from LB Leipzig.

@HazaUTD posted on social media: “Why has he benched Sesko? Amorim is so clueless it’s unreal.” Disgruntled @UTDLelle added: “Benching Sesko should be a criminal offence. Totally horrendous.” @ButtersUtters chimed in with: “Ah nice let's bench the striker who's got two in two.”

Another to question a big selection call from Amorim was @Dylyano, who said: “No Sesko has massively p*ssed me off. How are you watching Liverpool fail to deal with direct, high balls at their defence and decide to BENCH your 6’5” striker…” @UtdMicah added: “Sesko & Yoro were probably two of the non-negotiable to start for me today & he’s benched them both. Absolutely laughable to call this bloke a manager. He’s just picking the oldest players hoping their ‘experience’ will carry him over the line. Ruben Amorim is a coward.”

Amorim praise: What Man Utd boss said about Sesko

Amorim has previously talked up the skill set that Sesko brings to his side. He said: “I think more than looking at exactly what he did during the games, it is what he can bring to our team. If you see, against Burnley, he had some movements, especially inside the box, that we don’t have with Josh [Zirkzee], [Matheus] Cunha and even with Rasmus [Hojlund] in the past. We have a guy who likes to go inside the box to have a header, he can run - we need to use him more as a runner. He’s going to improve.”

Amorim has also said: “He has the characteristics that we needed. He’s a player that, with all the information we have, we need to stop the guy from working! He’s not the opposite, so that is also important. He is really young, he’s good in the air, he’s good running the channels, he’s good on the ball. So I think he has a great potential. I think he can improve a lot. For sure he’s going to feel at home in our club. He’s the right character to be in this group. We are really, really happy to have him.”

  • Big decisions: Amorim prepared to make tough calls

Amorim will point to the fact that he is paid to make tough decisions, and that means leaving the likes of Sesko out occasionally. He could still have an important role to play against Liverpool, with United looking for back-to-back wins against opponents that have suffered three successive defeats across all competitions.
