Chelsea's Sam Kerr called police officer 'f*cking stupid and white' after smashing taxi window, trial hears

As per The Telegraph, Kerr was in attendance at Kingston Crown Court on Monday as the prosecutor told jurors that she and her partner, United States international midfielder Kristie Mewis, were in a taxi after a night out two years ago when the driver phoned the police to complain that a woman in the car was trying to smash the rear window. He was advised to pull up outside Twickenham Police Station and seek the help of officers there.

Two police officers were in a marked car driving towards the police station and saw smashed glass around the taxi, as well as Kerr trying to crawl out of the broken rear window. The driver told police he had phoned them after one of the women had been sick in his car and was refusing to pay for the damage.

Kerr, who has pleaded not guilty after being accused of intentionally causing “racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress to a police officer”, and Mewis told officers that the driver refused to take them home and that they felt they were being "kidnapped" and "held hostage", and thus smashed the window to try and escape. On Monday, Kerr said that, as two women, she and Mewis were scared and felt a “sense of emergency” after being “trapped” with the male taxi driver for 20 minutes.

When one of the officers in the marked car, PC Stephen Lovell, tried to explain the situation to Kerr and Mewis, he claimed they became verbally abusive. The court was played body cam footage in which Kerr was heard to have said: “You guys are stupid and white. You guys are f*cking stupid and white. I’m looking you in the eyes, I’m looking you in the eyes, you guys are f*cking stupid, I’m f*cking over this sh*t.”

Kerr was then arrested for criminal damage and racially aggravated public order, though she was de-arrested for criminal damage once agreeing she would pay for the damage. The Chelsea star does not dispute the words she used but rejects that they were abusive or insulting within the terms of the offence.

Kerr is expected to give evidence on Tuesday as the trial continues. The Australia international striker, who is her nation's all-time top goal-scorer, has not played for club or country since December 2023 due to an ACL injury.
