The Confederation of African Football have revealed the latest club rankings for all of Africa’s top sides.
Based on the team’s performance in Caf competitions over the last five years, this ranking may well provide a critical glimpse into the makeup of the maiden African Super League—which has been mooted extensively in recent months.

New kids on the block, but the Tanzanian giants’ rise in recent years—underpinned by strong recruitment—has been admirable.

15. Simba SC

Defeated Caf Champions League finalists at the weekend, Chiefs’ loss against Al-Ahly was a reminder of how they are from Africa’s true elites.
They’re something of a surprise inclusion here, with an unlikely run in this year’s Caf CL contrasting sharply with domestic failure.

14. Kaizer Chiefs

Caf Champions League runners up in 2014, and Caf Confederation Cup runners-up in 2018, Vita Club recently lost head coach Florent Ibenge to RS Berkane.

13. AS Vita Club

Defeated Caf Confederation Cup finalists earlier this season, JSK’s golden era came at the start of this Millennium, as they reached three finals in three consecutive years.
They were African champions in 1981 and 1990.

12. JS Kabylie

Only founded recently, but backed by massive investment, Pyramids have established themselves quickly as genuine players on the African scene.
They were defeated Caf Confederation Cup finalists in 2020.

Tunisian giants who are without a Champions League win since 2007, but were Confed Cup winners in 2015.
They would surely be included in any maiden Super League.

10. ES Sahel

Surprise inclusions inside the top 10, Horoya haven’t reached a major final since 1978.
The Guineans were eliminated in the Caf Champions League group stage earlier this season.

9. Horoya

Another African side on the rise, Berkane were Caf Confederation Cup winners last season, and benefit from a strong structure as well as impressive recruitment.
The arrival of Ibenge from Vita Club could be another asset.

8. RS Berkane

Genuine African royalty, Mazembe featured in 10 Caf finals between 2009 and 2018.
The fact that haven’t been back to one since then doesn’t seem to be hurting them too much in the rankings, although they have slipped out of the top five.

7. TP Mazembe

They’re a dominant force in the domestic scene, but there’s a sense that Sundowns might still be finding their feet in the continent following the departure of Pitso Mosimane.
Eliminated by eventual winners Ahly from the Champions League this season, the Brazilians were Champions League winners in 2016.

6. Mamelodi Sundowns

African giants, no doubt, but Zamalek are without a Champions League title since 2002.
However, as 2019 Confed Cup winners, and Champions League finalists last time around, they nonetheless have enough clout in the coefficient to command a spot in the top five.

5. SC Zamalek

Back on the rise after 15 years without bothering the pinnacle of the African game, Raja are looking like a force again.
They have won two Confed Cups in the last four attempts—defeating JSK earlier this month—and also won the Super Cup in 2019.

Is this another glorious era for Raja, who enjoyed great success between 1997 and 2004?

4. Raja Casablanca

Champions League winners in 2017, Wydad reached the final in 2019 again, only to be defeated by Esperance.
They continue to be an immense threat in the CL, and appeared well placed to reach the final this time around, only to be stunned by Chiefs in the semis.

Esperance were always going to rank highly here after winning back-to-back Champions League titles in 2018 and 2019.
They will be genuine contenders to go the distance in the maiden African Super League.

2. Esperance

The continent’s top dogs, there was never any doubt that Ahly would again sit atop the rankings after winning yet another Champions League title.
After two final defeats in 2017 and 2018, they’ve turned things around in recent years, and can now aim to win the big one three times in a row—a feat that no club has ever achieved before.
