  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Atlanta United are reportedly on the verge of completing the transfer of Miguel Almirón, bringing the Paraguayan star back to the club six years after his departure. The Five Stripes have agreed on a fee with Premier League side Newcastle United, with only personal terms between Atlanta and Almirón remaining -- a detail not expected to pose any issues, according to the report.

The Telegraph reported the agreement between Newcastle and Atlanta United, while GiveMeSport broke the news about talks between the clubs.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Almiron played for Atlanta from 2017-2019, winning MLS Cup with the Eastern Conference side in 2018, while establishing himself as one of the league's best players during that span. He was a league MVP finalist in 2018 and was named MLS Best XI in both campaigns. In 2019, he was sold to Newcastle for a then-league-record fee of $25.6 million (£21M).

Earlier this offseason, fellow MLS Eastern Conference side Charlotte FC had initially held talks with Almiron's camp over a transfer, but they eventually left the bargaining table and turned their sights to Ivory Coast star Wilfried Zaha, who signed with the club last week.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Almiron has made 189 Premier League appearances for the Magpies since his 2019 transfer to England, where he has scored 23 goals while recording six assists.

The club is also in talks for an MLS-record fee transfer for Middlesbrough forward Emmanuel Latte-Lath, with the forward reportedly on the verge of joining for a fee of $16.2M.

Otherwise, United are currently in the midst of their preseason camp, with their next friendly coming against MLS NEXT Pro side Chattanooga FC later today.
