‘He should have walked!’ – Arsenal told Myles Lewis-Skelly deserved red against PSV by former ref as Mikel Arteta praised for hooking defender after just 34 minutes

The 18-year-old was booked in the 24th minute for fouling Luuk De Jong and soon after he brought down Richard Ledezma. Ex-Premier League referee Keith Hackett believes the left-back "should have walked" but praised manager Mikel Arteta for taking him off in the 34th minute to keep their full complement of players.

Hackett told Football Insider: "We witnessed a little bit of inconsistent officiating. I thought the first yellow for Lewis-Skelly was a little weak but then having got that yellow he commits a very clear yellow card offence by bringing his opponent down and stopping a promising attack; for which he should have then walked. He didn't. But his manager was alert and had seen what had happened and rightly subbed him. That maintained the 11 players on the field of play for the remainder of the game."

Arsenal kept 11 players on the pitch and went on to win the game 7-1 in PSV. It would take a miracle for the Gunners to not reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League after this mauling on Tuesday night. And Lewis-Skelly will be available for the return leg in London.

Arteta's Arsenal travel to Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday before hosting PSV in the second leg of this last-16 Champions League tie on Wednesday.
