Arsenal's Edu replacement? Gunners line up Monaco and ex-Red Bull chief to take over as sporting director

At 43, Thiago Scuro brings two decades of experience, having started his career in Brazil with Audax Rio in the regional leagues before climbing his way up the ladder of European football. His ascent to Monaco's sporting director position in 2023 from RB Leipzig represents the peak of his career thus far, reflecting a professional trajectory shaped by strategic thinking, adaptability, and a keen eye for emerging talent. These qualities make him a fitting candidate for Arsenal as they seek to appoint a visionary director capable of driving the club forward.

Alongside Scuro, Arsenal could also consider Real Sociedad’s director of football, Roberto Olabe, as another candidate to replace Edu, reported The Athletic. Olabe’s contributions at Real Sociedad have been nothing short of remarkable, with the Spanish side winning their first major trophy in over 30 years by claiming the Copa del Rey in 2021. Interestingly, Olabe has a unique connection to Arsenal’s head coach Mikel Arteta. In 2004, it was Olabe who signed Arteta, bringing him into the Spanish side, where the midfielder began to make a name for himself.

As Edu prepares to leave Arsenal, he has a new challenge awaiting him with Greek businessman Evangelos Marinakis set to be his new employer. It is reported that the Brazilian is set to be tasked with overseeing acquisitions and bolstering the operational network across Nottingham Forest in England, Olympiacos in Greece, and Rio Ave in Portugal. Given his experience at Arsenal, Edu’s expertise in managing the multi-club logistics will be critical to Marinakis’ vision of building a prominent football network across Europe.
