    WHAT HAPPENED?

Onana was spotted using vaseline on his gloves during a busy first half against Liverpool, in which he was forced to make three saves. In total, he faced 15 shots in 45 minutes, but fans were left confused by the efficiency of using a slippery substance on his gloves, after seeing him concede to Luis Diaz.

  • WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Parody account @unluckyfootie wrote: "Onana using vaseline on his gloves, no wonder he concedes so many goals."

Journalist David Cartlidge, @davidjaca, wrote: "The vaseline on gloves thing will never not be bizarre. Plenty have done it before Onana and it's apparently even more beneficial during wet weather. Still, it's odd."

@GingerPirlo_ added: "Hold on!? Why is Onana sticking Vaseline on his gloves? How does lubing your grip up help you catch the ball?"

@itsmeg_statham said: "I need to know the logic behind Onana putting Vaseline on his gloves. How does that make any sense?"

@Brett_leverton added: "Can anyone who plays or coaches explain to me why Onana just whacked loads of Vaseline on his gloves?"

    WHAT DOES THE VASELINE DO?

Applying vaseline to goalkeeper gloves is not a new tactic, as it actually makes the gloves stickier, and potentially makes it easier for stoppers to catch the ball. Newcastle United legend Shay Given and ex-Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart have both used the product in the past.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Onana has conceded 44 goals in 30 Premier League games this season and has kept eight clean sheets. It remains to be seen if the vaseline will help as the season progresses.
