The backup stopper was forced to resign after sparking gambling investigations - leaving his ex-club without a replacement when their No.1 got injured

Sutton United have been left to rue the departure of former backup goalkeeper Wayne Shaw after picking up an untimely injury to their first-choice stopper.

Returning to National League action against Torquay on Saturday, the club's regular No.1, Ross Worner, was forced off after just 15 minutes.

'Wayne Shaw is a legend'

But with Shaw having left the club during the week on the back of the fallout over his pie-eating antics, Sutton had no choice but to put an outfield player in goal to replace him.

The non-league outfit earned plenty of praise this season for their FA Cup exploits, which carried them to the fifth-round stage.

A remarkable run was eventually ended by a 2-0 defeat to Premier League heavyweights Arsenal but while the coffers at Gander Green Lane benefited from a cup adventure, Sutton’s exploits came at a price.

Shaw – their larger-than-life netminder – was caught on camera during the reversal against the Gunners eating a pie in the dugout.

With odds having been offered on him doing just that by Sun Bets, investigations were launched by the Football Association and Gambling Commission.

Shaw was forced to quit his various roles at Sutton as a result, leaving the club with just one goalkeeper on their books.

That situation came back to haunt them on Saturday, and Sutton have now thrown the gloves to defender Simon Downer.
