Under-fire referee Daniel Bennett to take charge of 2017 MTN8 Cup final

Top PSL referee Daniel Bennett is set to officiate the 2017 MTN8 Cup final between Cape Town City and SuperSport United on Saturday.

The South African match official was scheduled to take charge of a crucial 2017 Caf Champions League semi-final second-leg clash between Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel next weekend.

However, African football’s mother body, Caf, recently confirmed that Bennett had been dropped from the match and he has been replaced by his countryman, Victor Gomes.

This was after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) lodged a protest with Fifa over the performance of Bennett and his assistants Eldrick Adelaide and Steve Marie during the 2018 World Cup qualifier between Ghana and Uganda last weekend.

The match officials denied Ghana a perfect goal in the 93rd minute with television replay showing that it was a perfect goal.

Nevertheless, the PSL have since appointed Bennett for the highly anticipated encounter between the Citizens and Matsatsantsa at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

He was voted PSL Referee of the Season in 2000/01 and 2010/11.
