After a turbulent 12 months, Mitch Nichols has entered into discussions with Wellington Phoenix as Mark Rudan weighs up adding the midfielder to his squad.
The Covert Agent can reveal Rudan will make a decision on whether Nichols joins his still growing side within the next week.
Nichols is currently a free agent having departed Perth Glory in February last year before spending less than a week with Indonesian side Persela Lamongan, who he left for family reasons.
The 29-year-old was also banned for four matches at the beginning of last season after admitting to drug possession.
Prior to those troubles, Nichols had impressed in patches with Western Sydney Wanderers, who he joined in 2015 after a short stint in Japan with Cerezo Osaka.
The five-time Socceroo began his career with Brisbane Roar before a brief spell with Melbourne Victory, meaning if he joins the Phoenix it will be his fifth A-League side.
Rudan had added just one player to his squad so far this off-season, with former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor making the move to Wellington.
The Phoenix are also set to add former player Jacob Tratt to their side.
