Terry not ruling out staying at Aston Villa with focus on Premier League promotion

The former England captain still has the appetite to play on as he looks to help his current team back into the top flight

Chelsea legend John Terry has not ruled out staying at Aston Villa if they fail to win promotion to the Premier League.

Terry has played 31 games for Villa in the Championship this season and has helped Steve Bruce’s team secure at least a play-off spot.

The 37-year-old has previously said that he would never play for any Premier League club other than Chelsea but he has not ruled out another season at Villa Park if the club fail to get promoted.

“My aim at the start of the season was to get us up, whether that was automatic or via the play-offs,” Terry told Talksport.

"One last push and hopefully we can go out with a bang and make it an easy decision at the end.”

Terry’s Villa contract is up at the end of the season but he does not want to step away from the game just yet.

He added: “I still have the appetite and hunger for sure. I just want to get this season finished.”

The centre-half was linked with Birmingham City last summer after leaving Chelsea amid speculation he would become player-coach at St Andrews under Harry Redknapp, but he is very happy with his decision to have signed for Villa.

"Chelsea will always be my club for sure but since I have been at Aston Villa, I have given my all and the fans have been superb with me. They have welcomed me with open arms and I like to think I have given back on the pitch and on the training field,” said the former England captain.

"It has been a good combination and worked well for both, I feel.

"It's been an incredible journey so far. It is one I have thoroughly enjoyed. I certainly made the right decision in the summer.”
