K’Ogalo will lock horns with the GOtv Shield winners in the KPL curtain raiser and the first ‘Mashemeji’ derby of 2018 season

Gor Mahia will have a psychological edge over rivals AFC Leopards when the two sides clash in Nakuru on Sunday.

K’Ogalo will lock horns with the GOtv Shield winners in the KPL curtain raiser and the first ‘Mashemeji’ derby of 2018, in the industrial town of Nakuru which will provide the neutrality for both sets of fans.

A meeting between two of Kenya’s fiercest rivals usually brings business to a standstill and the Nakuru duel is expected to follow the same script.

But history between two of Kenya’s most supported clubs, in this competition, favours Gor Mahia; the good form and strength of the squad notwithstanding.

Record 16 KPL champions K’Ogalo will go into Sunday’s match at Afraha Stadium chasing for yet another mark; a fifth Super Cup title. AFC Leopards, on the other hand, are still hoping for their maiden appearance at the top podium in this competition.

Gor Mahia have lifted the title four times in the past eight years - 2009, 2012, 2015 and 2017 save for 2012 and 2013 when they lost to Tusker and 2015 to Bandari.

Other than 2010 when Sofapaka played AFC Leopards, the other Super Cup final where Gor Mahia were not involved was in 2011 where Sofapaka beat Ulinzi Stars by a solitary goal.

On the other hand, AFC Leopards are still chasing for their maiden Super Cup title and the second appearance in the final since 2010. Ingwe lost their last Super Cup match by a solitary goal to Batoto ba Mungu.
