Mohun Bagan: Sankarlal Chakraborty demands fringe players to increase squad strength

The head coach wants two midfielders and one defender to increase squad depth...

Swapan Banerjee, the newly appointed Football Secretary of Mohun Bagan, held a meeting with head coach Sankarlal Chakraborty and Sishir Ghosh at the club premises on Tuesday to listen to the demands of the coach and to finalise the list of players for the upcoming Calcutta Football League (CFL).

Chakraborty has demanded two midfielders and one defender to strengthen the squad. Currently, there are 25 players on the roster including Yuta Kinowaki, who will available only for the latter half of the season. The coach has requested for a minimum of 30 footballers including four goalkeepers so that he has adequate resources to organise practice matches during training sessions.

All the signings for 2018-19 season were made by a technical committee comprising of Debashish Dutta, Srinjoy Bose, Satyajit Chatterjee, Compton Dutta and coach Chakraborty. But all members except the coach has resigned which has seen the club land in an administrative crisis.

Even the latest recruit Sukhdev Singh was approved by the resigned members.

The club is currently in need of funds and it is likely that the new players would be low-profile signings.

The current players have not yet received their salary for the past three months but Banerjee assured that from Thursday, the financial comittee will start dispensing cheques in favour of the footballers. It has been more than a month since the season has finished but most of the foreign contingent is yet to return to their homeland. Aser Dipanda is yet to receive his flight tickets from the club along with his pending remuneration.

Mohun Bagan is set to start practice from July 2, around two weeks prior to their first match in the CFL.

Meanwhile, Banerjee said that the resigned technical committee member Compton Dutta will find a place in the new committee. "It has not yet been decided. But we want more former players to come forward and help the club."

Also, Secretary Anjan Mitra has been busy replacing the resigned members. Sishir Ghosh has been added to the executive committee as a special invitee to make up the numbers but the former forward refused to comment on his chances of filing election candidature under the panel headed by secretary Mitra.

The current impasse looks like can only be solved through election but since the balance sheet of 17/18 season has not yet been sanctioned, conducting elections in the near future is not possible.
