The former national star sheds light on the chances of the Black Stars at the approaching continental showpiece in Egypt

Former Ghana and Bayern Munich defender Samuel Osei Kuffour believes the Black Stars' underdog status could be a blessing in disguise at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt

The West Africans will be going in search of a first continental title since 1978, having come close in making the semi-finals at the last six tournaments and reaching the final in 2010 and 2015.

For the group stage of the June 21-July 19 championship, the Black Stars have been drawn against defending champions Cameroon, Benin and Guinea-Bissau.

“I am looking forward to the Afcon but the most important thing is that we go into it without pressure," Kuffour told Citi Sports.

“We are going into the tournament with a free mind because we are not favorites.

“If you count about five teams that could win the tournament, no one will mention Ghana.

“This is where our chance lies because we are going into the tournament with a free mind.

“We [think] that we are not going to bring the cup so it could be a surprise.

“Football is full of surprises. Nobody thought Cameroon would win the competition two years ago but they did.

“The belief in the country is low regarding the Black Stars going all the way to win the cup. It could be a shock for all of us."

Ghana, four-time champions, will open their campaign against Benin on June 25 before facing Cameroon, whom they lost to in the 2017 event, on June 29.

A date with second-time tournament participants Guinea-Bissau will signal the end of the group stage for the Black Stars.
