Class One referee Yao Ametepe has been banned eight matches following a terrible mistake during Ghana Premier League matchday eleven fixture between Ashanti Gold and Hearts of Oak at the Len Clay Sports Stadium.
With the game goalless by the 30th minute, Ashanti Gold defender Emmanuel Nti Mensah handled the ball in the box and Ametepe pointed to the spot. However, after Vincent Atinga was ready to restart play with the penalty kick, the centre man rescinded his decision and settled on drop ball.
"The GFA executive committee has approved the match review committee’s recommendation in respect of the Ghana Premier League Day 11 match between Ashantigold SC and Hearts of Oak SC in Obuasi," a GFA statement read.
"After reviewing a video of the match, Referee Yao Ametepe is hereby banned for eight (8) GFA sanctioned matches for denying Accra Hearts of Oak a penalty and also for not re-starting the game with the drop-ball inside the penalty area; rather dropping it outside the penalty area. The ban takes immediate effect," the statement added.
Ametepe is expected back in action in the second round of the season on matchday 20, since there will be one FA Cup game within this period to reduce the league matches to seven.
