RB Leipzig key figure Ralf Rangnick emerges as unlikely front-runner for Everton job

The former RB Leipzig manager has emerged from nowhere to become a joint-favourite with Marco Silva in the race to be the next permanent Toffees boss

RB Leipzig sporting director Ralf Rangnick is the new front-runner to be Everton manager after appearing out of nowhere.

The Toffees sacked Ronald Koeman over a month ago, yet appear no closer to appointing a permanent new manager as caretaker boss David Unsworth took charge of his sixth game on Thursday night - an embarrassing 5-1 home defeat to Atalanta.

Rangnick, who has managed for over 30 years but has not been in an active coaching role at RB Leipzig in the 2015/16 season, was not even listed by bookies at the start of this week but is now 2/1 (3.00) joint-favourite with Marco Silva Paddy Power to get the job.

Unsworth is next in line at 4/1 (5.00) to get the role on a permanent basis, and although his odds have understandably drifted from 9/4 (3.25) since the thrashing by Atalanta, the Goodison legend will be settled as the market winner if he takes charge of the next four games.

Despite stating he was not interested in the Everton job, Sam Allardyce is still available at 6/1 (7.00) to get it. He was priced at 25/1 (26.00) as recently as Thursday, so there has clearly been a flurry of interest in the former England manager.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche has long been linked with the position and is 9/1 (10.00) to move across the north-west of England to Merseyside, but the chances of the Toffees prying him away are growing slimmer as Burnley's incredible run of form continues.

Beyond those five are a trio of former Premier League managers; Louis van Gaal and Alan Pardew - who has been heavily linked with the vacant West Bromwich Albion position - can be backed at 10/1 (11.00), ahead of Andre Villas-Boas who is available at 20/1 (21.00).

The sudden emergence of Rangnick combined with Watford’s understandable reluctance to allow Silva to leave means that the German could very well be the next Everton manager as the Merseysiders look to rescue their season and justify the big-money signings of players like Jordan Pickford and Gylfi Sigurdsson.
