Betting: Marco Silva the new favourite to replace Mazzarri at Watford

Having failed to achieve progress in the Premier League or win over the club’s supporters, Walter Mazzarri has rather unsurprisingly become the seventh Watford manager to be given the sack since Gino Pozzo became owner in 2012.

With the former Inter boss having taken over from the popular Quique Sanchez Flores, the Hornets board will be determined to get their next appointment right after a particularly disappointing season saw the side finish just one place above the relegation zone.

Despite ultimately failing to save Hull City from the drop, Marco Silva did enough in his short spell in the Premier League to ensure he will not be short of suitors, with Paddy Power offering odds of 9/4 (3.25) on the Portuguese manager remaining in the top flight at Vicarage Road.

However, while competition for Silva’s signature may prove intense, the Hornets should have better luck in persuading Leonid Slutsky to take on his first managerial position outside of Russia.

The former CSKA Moscow boss has been working in an advisory role for Roman Abramovich at Chelsea since January in order to improve his English, and can be backed at 3/1 (4.00) to be handed the reins at a fellow London club this summer.

Boasting a CV that includes the most unlikely title triumph in Premier League history, Claudio Ranieri is on offer at 4/1 (5.00) to return to English football less than six months after leaving Leicester City.

Also handed the sack last season, Alan Pardew is available at 8/1 (9.00) to make his comeback in slightly unlikely circumstances at a club that has hired just one British manager since Pozzo took over five years ago.

Available for hire after leaving Inter earlier this year, Stefano Pioli 9/1 (10.00) would appear a more typical appointment considering his impressive record in Italian football, while his predecessor at San Siro, Frank de Boer 17/1 (18.00), would also represent an exciting coup despite his failure to impress in Serie A.
