Nigeria women’s senior team are faced with a slow start to their preparation for the 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations following the arrival of only six of 48 players in camp.
In a breakdown, 29 home-based and 19 overseas-based players made up the 48-woman provisional squad that were asked to report to camp on Thursday by head coach Thomas Dennerby.
On Thursday evening, Edo Queens trio of Oyinyechukwu Okeke, Nneka Julius and Peace Efih and FC Robo duo Chidinma Okeke and Rasheedat Ajibade were early arrivals in camp.
While Christy Ohiariaku, who was in action for Confluence Queens against Rivers Angels in Port Harcourt on Wednesday joined the team from her club’s base in Lokoja on Friday evening.
In a tweet on Saturday, the team disclosed that Ajibade and Okeke were released to honour their club’s Nigeria Women Premier League clash with Osun Babes in Osogbo this weekend.
It also said that others yet to arrive camp, including those taking part in Women’s Federation Cup final duel between Rivers Angels and Ibom Angels are expected latest next week Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the reigning African champions will find out their opponents in the preliminary stage of the women’s football event at a draw ceremony scheduled to hold in Accra on Sunday.
